Ceylon vs. Cassia Cinnamon: What the Label Should Tell You

Most cinnamon sold in supermarkets is cassia. If a product says Ceylon, here is what to look for to confirm it.

"Cinnamon" covers more than one plant. Ceylon cinnamon comes from Cinnamomum verum, while cassia usually comes from Cinnamomum cassia and related species. Cassia is cheaper and far more common.

Why the difference matters to shoppers

Cassia naturally contains much more coumarin than Ceylon cinnamon. Food-safety authorities publish guidance on coumarin intake, which is one reason some people specifically look for Ceylon.

What to check on the label

Look for the botanical name, not just the word "Ceylon" in the product title. Check the amount of cinnamon per serving and whether it is a powder or an extract. If a product does not state the species, treat that as a missing detail.

If you take medication or have a medical condition, speak to a doctor or pharmacist before adding any supplement.

Please note: prices, availability and formulations change. Check the merchant's page for current details before buying.
